I am pleased to invite you to several
special events to help commemorate the two year anniversary of the
passing of a gentle giant whose talent and humanity are greatly missed.
These events include:
1. A day-long "Artist's Spotlight" at the resplendent art park Grounds
for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey, featuring demonstrations of
Isaac Witkin's innovative and ground breaking casting techniques.
During this event, Rats Restaurant and Cafe will be serving desserts in
the shape of the park's centerpiece, Witkin's stone sculpture "Garden
State", a work commissioned by philanthropist J. Seward Johnson, the
park's founder. (At 55-75 tons, it is the largest tribute ever created
to the State of New Jersey);
2. A Symposium and ribbon cutting to inaugurate the Isaac Witkin
Sculpture Park at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J., featuring a
presentation by art critic Karen Wilkin, along with a film Isaac
Witkin: In His Own Words, and a specially commissioned dance
performance;
3. A group show at the NewArtCentre in England entitled The New
Generation Revisited, featuring iconic works by Witkin along with the
other sculptors and painters who shook up the art world in the
1960's. This exhibition opens on May 10-- which happens to be
Isaac's birthday.
4. Relocation of three major steel sculptures at the Storm King Art
Center together for the first time.
You are welcome to attend all of these events-- virtually or in person!
With warm wishes,
Nadine Witkin

The New Generation Revisited
Isaac Witkin's "Volution",
Winner: First Prize
IV Paris Biennale, 1965
NewArtCentre
Roche Court
Salisbury, England
May 10-September 7, 2008
This summer exhibition, consisting of sculpture from the 1960's and
70's, will be a tribute to Bryan Robertson, who was perhaps the most
inspirational and far-sighted curator of his day. He was described by
Studio International as "the greatest director the Tate Gallery never
had." His show, The New Generation, was responsible for introducing a
group of sculptors who broke new ground exploiting revolutionary
technologies and innovative acrylic paints to explore the relationship
between color and form. This exhibition will be an opportunity to
introduce one of the most important movements of British sculpture to a
new audience, and also those who remember their work to revisit it. In
addition to iconic works by Isaac Witkin, it features ones by
David Annesley, Michael Bolus, Phillip King, Tim Scott, William Tucker
as well as work by Jules Olitski, Antony Donaldson and Francis Morland.

Volume 18, Number 1
Three works by Isaac Witkin are now together in one location for the
first time. Birth of Aphrodite (1977-8), Kumo (1971) and Shogun (1968)
were produced within a ten-year period. These three unpainted steel
sculptures are grouped in a small clearing along the North Trail.
